Teaching in Japan (and China)
From 2002-2006 I taught English in Japan, primarily to primary school and pre-school children. When I started working as a teacher in Japan, I was somewhat shocked to find that textbooks were used as the main teaching tool in many classes - even for pre-school children and infants who could not read or write (in Japanese or English). The lack of what I took to be appropriate teaching materials and methods for children spurred me on to create my own teaching resources involving the use of music, flashcards, games and animation. I turned these into a multimedia English course (Sing in English, Speak in English, Teach in English) which you can check out here. In 2009 I was approached by an English teacher working in China, who asked me to produce a follow-up topic-based series for Chinese children: Altogether English was the result.
